2.20.07

The 2007 season is underway. This offseason and start of the year has been remarkable so far. I have put in a high workload this offseason and it's paying off. I feel stronger than ever. At 29, I am able to do things that I have never done before. I am still working from a short run and training to be more technical than in past years. At this point, I have jumped 5m in practice and am training for this outdoor season. All these years later, everything is coming down to the 2008 Olympic trials.

Focus is the word for this year. This is the first time since I have jumped 5.40m that I have been able to focus this intensely. No matter what is going on this year, I have been able to make every jump count. I believe that Robert Howard's words may finally come true after all these years. He once said to me at a hotel late at night in Philly, "You will be a late bloomer and all you want will come true later than you expect..." Each time I compete, I think of him and the loved ones I have lost. My focus the past 3 years has changed. Fortunately, I have a family that has put their faith in me and allow me to put forth the sacrifice it takes to work this hard.

This year, I have teamed up with Brian Compton. I have known Brian for the last 11 years. He is a great coach and is setting a tone for practice. Believe me, it does help to have some one there to help you. He has a great knowledge of the sport and has helped me to become better than I have ever been. Thanks Brian!

Pole Vaulting has a lot of ups and downs. This year has been all ups. Until you realize it, you won't be able to combat it. It's been a long time since my last post, but I will continue to post more from now on. I hope you all are getting ready to do some big things this year. Keep me updated.

Gordy
